Tortuga ornamental: Mural colaborativo en Lynn
This summer I had the privilege of taking part in a truly special project in Lynn, Massachusetts, thanks to Beyond Walls, an organization that drives collaborative art initiatives to transform public spaces and strengthen the social fabric of communities.
Este verano he tenido la suerte de participar en un proyecto muy especial en Lynn, Massachusetts, de la mano de Beyond Walls, una organización que impulsa iniciativas artísticas colaborativas para transformar espacios públicos y fortalecer el tejido social de las comunidades.
Me uní a un grupo de siete artistas de diferentes países, Argentina, Italia, Estados Unidos y yo representando a España, con un objetivo común: llevar el arte de las aulas a las calles a través del programa Classroom to the Streets. Durante varias semanas trabajamos codo con codo con profesoras y estudiantes locales, compartiendo experiencias, inquietudes y sueños para después transformarlos en un mural que hablara de ellos y de su ciudad. Una de las cosas más bonitas del proyecto fue que los estudiantes de último curso tuvieron un papel activo en la pintura.
En nuestras reuniones surgió un tema central: la diversidad cultural que define a Lynn, donde más de la mitad de la población es inmigrante. Queríamos que esa riqueza de culturas y orígenes quedara plasmada en la pared, y también transmitir energía positiva frente a la percepción de inseguridad que algunos sienten en ciertos barrios. Por eso decidimos trabajar con colores vivos y alegres, capaces de contagiar vitalidad.
Además, una de las estudiantes habló con tanta ilusión sobre su pasión por las flores que enseguida quise incorporarlas en el diseño. Cada flor se convirtió en un símbolo de distintos continentes: una rosa para América, una protea para África y una flor de loto para Asia.
Siguiendo mi estilo, que mezcla naturaleza con elementos ornamentales, pensé que el centro del mural debía ser un animal marino, en conexión con el océano cercano y la biodiversidad de la zona. Finalmente, elegimos la tortuga marina, un símbolo que me pareció perfecto: es un animal migratorio, que viaja largas distancias, llevando siempre consigo su hogar. Representa el recorrido de tantas personas que han construido nuevas comunidades en Lynn, encontrando allí un lugar donde pertenecer. Su caparazón simboliza también la fuerza y la protección que la comunidad brinda a quienes llegan.
Para mí, este mural es mucho más que pintura en una pared. Es un reflejo de la diversidad, la esperanza y la calidez de una ciudad que se abre al mundo, y me siento agradecido de haber podido aportar mi granito de arena con Beyond Walls y con toda la gente maravillosa que formó parte del proceso.
